8:15 am                  Cultivation of Forest Mushrooms for Beginners

                                Jim Ochterski,  Cornell Cooperative Extension

Jim Ochterski will explain and demonstrate the basic steps of inoculating and cultivating forest mushrooms.  Done on a larger scale, this can become an enterprise that makes good use of cull timber from a typical Central New York woodlot.  Although they are challenging to grow, these mushrooms tend to sell quickly, and profitably, at farm markets and other venues.

Melissa Yearick, Upper Susquehanna Coalition, Wetlands Specialist

Melissa Yearick will share with us about wetlands and the often overlooked

wildlife found in them. Learn to identify several different species by sight

and sound and learn about their amazing adaptations to living in and using

wetlands.

10:15 am                The Eastern Bluebird, New York's Official Bird. When did you last see one?

Niles F. Brown, Cortland County Bluebird Coordinator, New York State Bluebird Society

Learn about this colorful harbinger of spring. You can increase the likelihood that you will see them on your property by placing nests in the appropriate locations and doing a few things to immunize competition.  We will view an introductory slide show, share ideas, learn about nest box construction, location and if time allows see Bluebirds in a nest box (video).  Material will be given out to help the novice and experienced birder.   This is a great family activity; it can go on for years.
